Description: Data is all around us, and data visualization is a powerful tool for storytelling, shaping narratives, and data preservation. In this online seminar, we will talk about how to adapt different kinds of weaving into a data visualization medium, using properties including color, texture, fiber, quantity/ratios, patterns, and draft design (e.g. expanding on the idea of Name Drafts). Attendees are encouraged to bring data sets or other materials (e.g. diaries, letters, favorite books, reading lists) that are meaningful to them, and we’ll have time to walk through the process of adapting different kinds of data and materials into something weavable. No prior experience working with data is required, and the workshop will be flexible enough to accommodate all weaving skill levels, whether you weave on a repurposed cardboard box or a 16-shaft floor loom.
