Session: Weave a Storage Basket with Naturally Dyed Reed

Description: In this basketry and natural dyeing class, we will combine two traditional crafts to create naturally dyed rattan reed materials for weaving a large storage basket. You will learn basic rattan basketry techniques, including how to weave a closed base, twining, twill weave, and overlay weave. During the natural dyeing portion, we’ll dye reed to use as colorful accents and pattern elements within the basket’s walls. Natural dye materials may include madder root, weld plants, and walnut hulls. By the end of class, you’ll have woven a decorative and functional basket perfect for storing projects, materials, or simply displaying in your home.
