Session: Indigo for Books

Description: This interdisciplinary workshop combines techniques for indigo dyeing, surface design, and bookbinding to create one-of-a-kind books. We begin by brewing a simple and safe natural indigo vat appropriate for home use, then use traditional Japanese dyeing techniques including stitch (nui-shibori) and clamp resist (itajime-shibori) to create layered surface design on cloth. Using our custom cloth for the book cover, we will employ the Secret Belgian Binding method to turn a series of simple stitched shapes into an elegant binding for our completely unique hand-dyed book.
