Description: The sounds of our environment can be fascinating, evocative, personally meaningful, or downright annoying. They offer a rich source of inspiration, but how exactly do we take that inspiration to the loom?
From 2018 – 2021 Cally was a contributor to the Aural Textiles project, capturing the sounds of the Scottish landscape and investigating ways of using them to inspire textile design in solo and collaborative projects. She has continued to use and develop these processes in her personal creative practice.
In this session Cally will introduce the principles of sound-inspired design, sharing her experience of collaborating with weavers, dyers and other textile artists through the Aural Textiles project and beyond. We will reflect on the sounds we hear in our local soundscape – from the uplifting to the mundane – and explore ways in which we can respond to them creatively. We’ll learn different ways of visualising sounds and consider how to interpret them in colour and weave structure, using any number of shafts.

Supplies that students will bring:
- One or two sheets of large drawing paper, at least 11″ x 14″
- Squared paper
- A soft pencil or a pen which is really comfortable to use – nothing scratchy or blotchy! Can be any colour, or bring more than one colour if you like.
- Paper scissors
- Ordinary pencil or pen for writing
