Description: This workshop will introduce students to the weaving technique known as “transparency weaving” in which an open ground cloth is woven simultaneously with supplemental inlay weft that forms the design element. Students will learn tapestry-based techniques for weaving pictorial or geometric designs. Advanced techniques will be presented for manipulating the inlay to create layered transparency. Students can create their own designs or choose from a variety of designs provided by the instructor. Ideas for how to effectively display transparent weavings will be discussed. This workshop will appeal to tapestry weavers who want to use their skills in a new way, and to multi-shaft weavers interested in decorative wall hangings and window coverings.

Supplies that students will bring: Prior to the workshop, students will warp their looms following instructions that will be emailed three weeks prior to the workshop date. The instructions will guide you to warp your loom using 16/1 linen at 15 epi, or 16/2 linen at 12 epi. Be sure you have the correct dent reed for your sett; reed substitution is highly discouraged. A warp of 12 inches wide and 2 yards long is adequate for the workshop. Students should bring extra warp yarn to use as ground weft, and a selection of yarns to use for inlay. Inlay weft can be any fiber. Fairly fine but not super fine will work best.
Note about looms: 4-harness looms are ideal for weaving transparencies. Rigid heddle looms will present tension issues. Frame/tapestry looms will present multiple problems. Use at your own risk!
