Description: Break out of blocks with split-shed weaving. Weave curves and blend colors using continuous wefts on a 4-shaft loom with no special equipment. In this intensive deep-dive class, students will create samples of multiple weave structure combinations using only four shafts and a straight threading. Most of these patterns would normally require a minimum of eight shafts. Work with combinations of twills, double weave, tied weaves, taquete, pique, and more! Weave samples using continuous, complementary, and supplementary wefts, as well as wefts which combine to produce shading for pictorial weaving. (This is the process that Deborah Silver uses to create imagery in her art.) Students will also learn to make a cartoon on cloth that will advance with the warp and that will not wrinkle when beating. Deborah will bring dozens of samples showing the extensive variety of weave structures that she has adapted for split-shed weaving.
Each student will work at their own pace. Although there are too many weave structure options to complete in class, students will leave with the ability to weave them at home with all of the drafts and instructions. Looms that allow multiple shaft tie-ups to each treadle are most preferable, but table and direct tie-up looms may also be used. (The floor loom weaving process is a bit faster than table looms.)

- A presentation of the many split-shed structures that can be woven using only four shafts, with accompanying samples.
- A lecture about the instructor’s art and a discussion of creative approaches to weaving.

- Pre-warped 4-shaft loom (jack, direct tie-up, or table).
- Four 10″and 14″ flat shuttles and one other shuttle of your choosing that will be comfortable to use with an 8- to 9-inch-wide warp.
- Various wefts.
