Exploring Double Two-Tie

Double two-tie (D2T) threadings* are incredibly versatile, offering the ability to weave a variety of different weave structures which can be used in block designs, color play, and texture, on fewer shafts. However, until recently, most of the available weave structures for D2T have been unrecognized and unexplored. It was a new method I developed for drafting D2T block designs which led to my discovery of these novel weave structures. And my ongoing explorations have revealed that they are remarkably useful.

Participants will learn how to use my method of drafting D2T to draft blocks designs on a D2T threading in a variety of different D2T structures, on eight or more shafts. Drafting in both the tie-up and lift-plan will be demonstrated. And structures which are suitable for floor looms, as well as structures which are better suited to a table or dobby loom will be included.

Participants will bring a warped loom and weave both the drafts I provide and the drafts they have created, in a selection of different weave structures. The workshop is better suited for eight or more shafts using a table or dobby loom. However, there will be drafts included which can easily be woven on a floor loom, and instruction will be given on converting other drafts to a skeleton tie-up.

I will also demonstrate other uses for these weave structures, for further areas of exploration, and will bring many woven examples for participants to examine.

*Double two-tie threadings use two tie-down shafts (T1, T2) alternating with two pattern shafts (P1, P2) in a T1, P1, T2, P2 arrangement. The tie-down shafts are the same from block to block, while the pattern shafts change from block to block. An example of a double two tie threading on eight shafts is block A (1, 3, 2, 4), block B (1, 5, 2, 6) and block C (1, 7, 2, 8).

Supplies that students will bring:

  • Warped loom with six or more shafts (instructions will be provided to the participants). Table or dobby looms preferred.
  • Weaving supplies – scissors, shuttles, bobbins, bobbin winder, yarn (same size as warp) in a contrasting color, needle, tape measure
  • Laptop preloaded with weaving software. Students can use a demo version of software such as Fiberworks if they don’t own weaving software.

Material Fee: $5
Materials Included: The material fee covers the class handouts.
