This class goes beyond plain weave to weave double-faced fabrics, tubes and twills. Using two heddles plus pick-up sticks, you’ll be amazing at what these rigid heddles looms can weave. The same yarns, one light and one dark will be used for both days.
Day one is double weave — double the fun with plain weave on two layers. You’ll wind your warp onto your loom at home but finish threading in class (details to come). Students will learn how to thread both heddles, insert pick up sticks and then weave a sampler that includes weaving two separate pieces of cloth at the same time, connecting those pieces to weave a double width, and then weaving a tube! Using the same warp, you’ll weave a small bag using these techniques.
Day two is all about using twills. Translating 4 shaft patters into rigid heddle threadings using two heddles, pick-up sticks and a heddle rod (that we will make in class).
Using the same yarns as day 1, but changing the threading and warp color sequence, you’ll start to warp your loom at the end of day one or in day two (depending on time). The class starts with reading 4 shaft threading patterns and then translating them to rigid heddle “multi-shafts”.
Students will have the opportunity to translate multiple drafts and choose the one that speaks to them to weave another a sampler plus a table runner or fabric for whatever you want.
Prerequisites: This is an advanced class, students should be comfortable direct warping and weaving independently.

Supplies that students will bring:
- Rigid Heddle Loom 12” or wider.
- Full warping setup (warping pegs, clamps, cardboard sticks/paper, threading hook, etc.)
- 2 Stick shuttles appropriate for a 10” warp
- 4 Pickup sticks at least 14” wide or 2 PU sticks and 2 long shuttles
- One or two ½” dowels slightly wider than the width of your project (about 14” long)
- Tape measure with small binder clip or wonder clip
- Tapestry needle for hemstitching
- Scissors
- Notebook/pad
- Pen or pencil, plus highlighters and colored pencils if you have
- Warp and Weft yarns, instructions will be provided
- Yarn Containment Unit (basket, paper bag, something to contain your warp yarn while you warp)
