Paper Weaving

Paper Weaving can go beyond the elementary over & under of construction paper we learned in school. What beautiful images are you attracted to? Would they be enhanced by adding some paper weaving? How can we stretch paper weaving into the realm of Art?

This workshop will show you the basics of managing the process of Paper Weaving, and will include how to cut the warp and weft for weaving, tips and tricks for the weaving process, and best practices for gluing. This class will also inspire you to bring out your art muse to create works of art with your paper weaving.

By the way, paper is fiber, and is another fabulous rabbit hole to explore to add to your creative repertoire.

Supplies that students will bring: You will need the following as essentials:

  • Paper – of all kinds. Paper in thickness somewhere between card stock and regular printer paper is best. Thin papers, such as the very thin kind of magazine pages, are harder to work with. Designer magazines sometimes have a really nice heavier weight paper that is perfect. When gathering your papers, choose a combination of photo imagery and over-all design.
  • X-Acto type craft knife with fresh blades – get the kind with the pointy ended blades.
  • Self healing cutting mat, about the size of your paper
  • Metal ruler without cork, at least 12 inches
  • Paper scissors
  • Small bottle of PVA Glue or a Uhu glue stick
  • A small paint brush for using with the glue; stiffer bristles work the best.
  • A small container to hold a small amount of water for rinsing glue brush
  • Newspaper or brown paper to protect table space
  • A few paper towels, just in case
  • Note taking materials
  • Optional – if you have them:
    • Rotary cutting tool – to cut paper
    • Plastic ruler that goes with the rotary cutter
    • Post-It tape or artist tape. Nice for holding paper down while cutting.
    • Pencil
