John Marshall

John Marshall has spent the past fifty years immersed in his love of Japanese textiles. Venturing off to Japan alone at the age of seventeen, he was privately tutored under a range of traditional craftspeople while apprenticed to a master bingata dyer. This opportunity allowed him to gain a deep knowledge into a broad range of traditional textile techniques. His artwork has been carried by leading galleries and museums throughout North America and Asia, with shows sponsored by the US State Department, Kodansha, and the Western Japan Mafia – to name just a few. John strives to share the knowledge he has gained through his decades of research through online postings, publications, and in-person teaching. His most widely distributed books are Make Your Own Japanese Clothes, Singing the Blues, and Salvation Through Soy.
