Kathrin Weber

My first weaving experience was in 1975 when I was introduced to weaving on a homemade frame loom. Amazingly basic – 2 pieces of bamboo suspended in the middle of a wooden frame. I wove freehand tapestry style and I was immediately in love with the idea of weaving. In 1976 I had an opportunity to weave on a floor loom in a yarn shop in Montpelier, VT. I was hooked for life!

Speed forward a few years. By 1980 I had graduated from a 2 year intensive Professional Fiber program in the western mountains of NC. It was designed to teach students not only the fundamentals of weaving and other fiber arts, but also how to set up a business to be a professional fiber artist/craftsperson. That program gave us step by step instruction as we built weaving proficiency. Even more importantly, we learned techniques in how to weave Good Cloth: design, setup, sett, beat, fiber types, creative problem solving, efficiency, possibilities. It was a fabulous opportunity for me in my early 20s.

I have been fully employed weaving, dyeing, and teaching since 1980. I have discovered so much that has guided my personal path in the fiber world through the mistakes and successes that I have encountered. Through teaching I am sharing techniques that I developed over the span of 44 years while I continue to learn from my students’ mistakes, explorations, and successes. It is a fabulous opportunity for me now at 50, 60, and 70 years old!
