Oshie-E and Kiribame are a Japanese version of inlay quilting. A cartoon is used as a guide in cutting jigsaw puzzle-piece-like shapes out of chipboard. These pieces are padded with batting and covered with shaded and patterned bits of silk. Next the “puzzle” is assembled leaving the edges of the scraps poking through to the back of the assembled image. The edges of the rigid shapes are employed to help acquire smooth, accurate edged as the bits are hand-sewn together from the back. The cardboard is removed and when flipped to the front we have a highly-detailed, hand-quilted piece of art.

Quilt squares may be prepared in this manner and later assembled into a larger piece, or any size endeavor may be executed as a single image. Variation of this process include using the same techniques with both fitted and layered elements.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
