Materials and Technique: Scarf is woven on 16 shaft (plus 4 for selvedges) from original draft on an AVL WDL 24 shaft loom. Two colors in warp: grey blue (8/2 tencel WEBS) alternating with olive silk (stash). One color in weft: red (20/2 silk Treenway). Sett: 24 epi. Extra red silk threads were added to achieve a more pleasing fringe.
Description:The threading for this draft came about after a study with Cally Booker (Dundee, Scotland) on creating drafts from sounds. There are several steps involved, including recording your sound, manipulating the wav form in a sound editing software, capturing the image of choice and using the software Stitchfiddle to plot a line of the sound image onto a grid. It was then transferred to Fiberworks and made into a draft for weaving.
My sound was two-fold. I was recording the sounds of heavy raindrops hitting the car roof as we waited for a lull in the rain to go into a restaurant. Next door, people were going in and out of a smaller restaurant getting take-out. While capturing my sound, my husband read and spoke aloud that other restaurant “Marco’s Cantina, Lolita’s Cocina”, which became MCLC.
I created a curved line of the voice, and interleaved it with a straight draw representing the steady beat of the rain. I have played around with many lift plans, most using a common twill tie-up. I like to use advancing treadlings for interest. This is one such draft, labeled “Y” in my files.
