A Study in Weft Ikat

Esther Reiquam, Seattle Weavers Guild, Seattle, WA

Material & Technique: Woven in plain weave on four shafts of an 8-shaft Gilmore loom. The pattern is my creation, inspired by Marjy Fiddler’s class on techniques in weft Ikat, Mary Zicafoose, and Peter Collingwood.

Warp: linen
Weft: Ruglets one and three: Hibernia wool, mercerized cotton twinning, Jacquard Acid Dyes. Ruglet two: wool of unknown provenance, linen twinning (same as warp), Cushing acid dyes

Description: This work is a progressive study, using the techniques of weft Ikat learned in Marjy Fiddler’s class at the Southeast Seattle Senior Center. I wanted to incorporate architectural images with a gradual change in color from dark browns to warm golds. As a study, it is easy to see how my thoughts evolved from one ruglet to the next, trying to get in fiber what was in my mind’s eye.\
