Material & Technique: 5 shaft waffle weave, 5 shaft from a handweaving.net pattern in 8/2 unmercerized cotton woven on a 8 shaft Schacht standard floor
Description: The spark for this project came straight from the parameters I’d set for myself: I wanted to make towels, incorporate texture, use colorful cotton yarns from my stash, and explore a “what if” question. With that framework in place, my imagination kicked into gear. I’ve always loved the feel and look of textured waffle weave, so that became my starting point. I played around with different color combos, eventually landing on a bold, high-contrast pairing. Traditionally, waffle weave uses the same color for both the warp and weft—but I couldn’t help but wonder: what if I used different colors for each? The result was striking—each side of the towel showcases a different dominant hue. So, which side is the “right” one? Honestly, both are.
