Lily of the Valley

Beth Linquist, Spokane Handweavers Guild, Spokane, WA

Materials & Technique: A row of Rya knots with 6 picks of plain weave between. I referenced To Weave the Swedish Way by Arianna Funk and Miriam Parkman. I used Rauma Ryegarn, and Rauma Prydvevarn yarn that is 100% Norwegian wool for the knotted rows. I used my handspun Finn wool yarn for the plain weave between the knotted rows. I purchased this roving from WildWood Farm at the Black Sheep Gathering in 2024. I wove this on my Schacht Table Loom.

Description: One of my goals this year is to embrace my heritage. My great grandfather on my father’s side was Alvin Sunholm. He was a Swede Finn and he loved to garden. I wanted to honor this and when I found out that the national flower of Finland is the Lily of the Valley I was thrilled. My grandparents on my mother’s side had Lily of the Valley flowers along the north side of their house. This is such a good memory for me. I found a simple Lily of the Valley clip art online and designed my project. I chose the Rya knot weaving technique which has a long tradition in Scandinavia. I used Rauma Ryegarn, and Rauma Prydvevarn yarn that is 100% Norwegian wool for the knotted rows.I used my handspun Finn wool yarn for the plain weave between the knotted rows.

This was such a fun project for me.
