Beginning Pine Needle Basket Weaving

Basketry is as old as humankind, and it is no wonder that ancient people used the abundant pine trees to make baskets for function, ritual and heritage.  If you have been curious about pine needle basketry, this workshop is designed for you.  We’ll begin with an overview of traditional forms of basketry and then narrow our focus to coiled baskets using pine needles.

During our 2 days together we will move from the basics of collection and preparation of pine needles, to how to start and form a basket, with tips on shaping and creating the style of the basket. As our time progresses, I’ll introduce you to a variety of stitches used in a coiled basket.  There will be time to practice, ample handouts for technique and resources, and, due to the limited number in the class, a lot of individual attention. By the conclusion of the workshop you will have produced a sampler piece and developed skills that will provide a foundation for your future projects.

Pine needle basketry is an inexpensive hobby.  All you’ll need for this workshop is a little patience and an appreciation of learning an ancient skill.  Materials will be provided for you.

Leader: Charlene Virts
