Available Workshop Highlights

Seats are still available in these two workshops:  Combining Common Cotton with Mary Berent and Dye Your Own Yarn with Allison Harding.  Mary has been a weaver for over 40 years.  Cotton is always her go to material for weaving.  Her first projects were cotton, and she still loves the utility and versatility of cotton.  Mary’s articles have been featured in Weaver’s Magazine, Handwoven Magazine, Spin off and Shuttle, Spindle and Dyepot.  Join Mary in her 3-day workshop Monday-Wednesday.

Allison is an award-winning fiber artist who knits, crochets, weaves, felts, dyes, cards, spins, sews, and more. If its fiber related, she’s either tried it or it’s on her bucket list. Allison is an NWRSA Certified Fiber Arts Judge who is passionate about education.  She strives to explain not only the how, but the why of everything she does in fun and innovative ways.  Learn how to dye your own yarn with Allison in a 1-day workshop on Tuesday.

Available Seminar Highlights

Two interesting seminars have seats available:  Dorset Buttons Virtual Hands-on Seminar with Denise Kovnat, and Fiber, Yarn, Fabric with Linda Kubik.  Make a Dorset Button with Denise in this Friday afternoon seminar.  Denise will be on the big screen instructing the class on creating buttons.  A classroom assistant will help those in-person attendees make buttons.  A Zoom at home seminar is also available for purchase beginning March 27.

Linda’s seminar explores the diversity and complexity of our natural fibers. This is an interactive, hands-on class. Everyone will receive a packet of various types of natural fibers and yarns.  The group will discuss spinning and how it affects the yarn and fabric structure as well as examining many types of commercial yarn and how they relate to fabric structure and hand.

Registration Reminders, Lodging, Class Highlights

  • March 10, 2023January 11, 2025
  • by Dan Steves

The last day to register for a Conference Package is Sunday, March 19.  The Package includes three seminars, a conference bag, woven nametag, and the three evening events for $395.  This is a $70 savings over a la carte pricing for the same seminars and events.  We hope you will take advantage of this opportunity to make the most out of your conference experience this June.

If you have registered for a Conference Package, make sure that you signed up for the seminars you want. Some people were surprised to find they had not registered for seminars when they thought they had. There are also people who signed up for fewer than the three seminars included in the Conference Package.   Being on a wait list for a seminar does not count toward the limit of three. Let Janis Johnson the Conference Registrar know if you have questions or need help, by sending an email to registrar@anwgconference2023.com.

The Registration system will not be available from Monday, March 20 through Sunday, March 26.  Registration will open again at 7:00 AM PDT on Monday, March 27 with a la carte sales for seminars, the Shopping Extravaganza and Reception, the Banquet and Keynote Address, and Saturday’s Reception and Fashion Show, plus all available workshops and meetings.

Lodging Availability

An update on the rooms available at the conference hotels:

Riverhouse has more than 15 rooms available at conference rates from Sun-Tues. June 11-13.  Three rooms available on Wed. 6-14; 0 rooms on Thurs. 6-15; 1 room on Friday 6-16; and more than 15 available on Saturday, June 17.  The room block rates are more than $100 per night less than the current room rates.  We will not be able to get any additional rooms added to our block at these lower prices.

Red Lion has 20 double queen rooms available at $209/night.  This hotel is right across the street from the Convention Center and a good option.

The Element Hotel has 17 rooms available, and the rooms include a cook-to-order breakfast and happy hour with food daily.  Please contact these hotels directly to check on availability for your length of stay.  The phone numbers and links can be found under the “Places” tab at the top of each webpage.

Bend has over 25,000 hotel rooms, so if you are looking for other accommodations, you can certainly find it with a quick internet search.

Available Workshop Highlights

We still have seats available in these two fantastic workshops: Diane Totten’s Crimp and Create and Susan Wilson’s Polychrome Crackle.  Diane has been experimenting and weaving crimp fabric, making clothing, and teaching this technique to students for many years.  She has produced DVD’s and articles in major fiber arts magazines as well as teaching at the John C. Campbell Folk School in North Carolina.  Take this opportunity to learn a unique weaving technique from Diane right here in the Pacific Northwest.

Polychrome Crackle with Susan Wilson features amazing ways to design drafts and create color interaction in a block weave on only 4 shafts.  Susan has written a book, Weave Classic Crackle & More, as well as many articles for fiber arts magazines.  She has a Certificate of Excellence in Weaving at the Master level in the crackle weave structure.  You won’t find a better opportunity to learn a weave structure from a master weaver like Susan.

Available Seminar Highlights

Two interesting seminars have seats available:  Thimbleberry Felt Designs with Tylar Merrill and Color Theory from the Fringe with Michele Belson.  Tylar has explored felt design for many years and has developed different techniques and processes to achieve her wonderful garment creations.  You will want to explore felt designing with Tylar in this Friday afternoon seminar.

Michele has been teaching color theory, weaving, and pattern drafting for many years now all over the US as co-owner of Lunatic Fringe Yarns.  This seminar explores hue, value, and color contrasts using a variety of tools to help your work reflect your personal color vision.  Sign up for this seminar on Saturday afternoon.

Students will be contacted by Instructors in mid-April with any special instructions for workshops and seminars.  Should you need to contact the instructor before this, please email the Education Co-chair, Ginger Kaldenbach, and include the session name and your question.

We are looking forward to hosting all of you at the 2023 ANWG Conference.  Take advantage of these wonderful educational opportunities here in Central Oregon.  Grab your friends and sign up for a workshop and seminars, participate in the shows and exhibits, and experience the camaraderie of a fiber arts conference June 12-17 in Bend, Oregon.  Registration information is on our website home page https://anwgconference.org/archive/2023/

We want to encourage all attendees to participate in the shows, events, and activities that will be offered conference week.  The Daily Schedule lists dates and times for all classes, events, and activities. There are lots of workshops and seminars available, so check out the offerings in our Education pages.  Individual seminar and event tickets will go on sale March 27.

Entries for the Fashion Show are now open.  Consider entering an item or garment to show all of us your wonderful fiber art and perhaps win an award!  You can model your show entry or use a volunteer model.  Now’s the time to finish up that jacket, vest, top, shawl or scarf you’ve been working on and enter the show.  Diane Totten is our judge.  The Fashion Show webpage has all the information you need to enter.

The Juried Show is accepting entries until May 1.  This exhibit will be displayed along with the Instructor’s Showcase in the Riverhouse Hotel Deschutes North & South rooms from Thursday afternoon-Saturday afternoon, June 15-17.  Entry requirements, award categories, and forms are available on the Juried Show webpage . You will receive helpful comments from our judge, Susan Wilson.  There will be 25 awards given, and that means cash in addition to the beautiful handwoven award ribbons in each category.

Beginning March 1, entries will be accepted for the Open Show and the Conference Colors Exhibit.  See their webpages for entry requirements and awards.  These shows are not juried but are offered as an opportunity for all fiber artists to show their work and inspire conference attendees.  All shows will be open to the public for viewing on Friday and Saturday, June 16-17.

Some other activities to plan for are the Shuttle Race; both a race on Saturday at 1 PM, and a decorative shuttle display in the Marketplace Thursday afternoon-Saturday afternoon.  See the webpage for information on how to enter your shuttle in the race or both categories.

Fiber art demonstrations will take place outside the convention center on Friday and Saturday. Stop by and see a new weaving, spinning, felting, or other fiber art you may want to try.  If you’d like to sit and chat while working on a project, there will be Spin-in, Knit-in, Weave-in spaces with chairs and tables.  Bring a towel for the towel exchange Wed-Sat. and pick up a different towel on Saturday.  Door prizes will be awarded Thursday-Saturday of conference week.  You will want to visit the Marketplace vendor hall open Thursday afternoon-Saturday afternoon and pick up all your fiber art supplies and see the Guild booths and special exhibit booths located in the lower-level exhibit hall.

Events off site include the Johansen Tapestry exhibit at Central Oregon Community College library in the beautiful Rotunda Gallery.  Margaret Johansen was an internationally known tapestry weaver who lived in McMinnville, Oregon, and her art hangs in churches and other venues in Oregon.  If you would like to see some of the ranch life in the area, we are offering a Wednesday afternoon van trip to the Crescent Moon Alpaca Ranch in Terrebonne, north of Redmond on Highway 97.  This is a beautiful ranch where you can feed the alpacas and shop in their delightful boutique store for alpaca themed items and yes, YARN.

Feb. 14 Conference News and Updates

  • February 14, 2023
  • by Dan Steves

Happy Valentine’s Day!

Registration will open again on Wed. Feb. 15 at 7 AM, PST.  We apologize for any inconvenience with our unexpected difficulties in the credit card processing system.  We have worked diligently to correct the issues and will be able to reopen tomorrow.

A new feature in the workshop and seminar listings will be a notice “only 5 (4,3,2) seats left” to let you know that the class is almost full.  We do have some workshops and seminars that are full, but there are still lots of seats left in most subject categories.   We did contact the instructors and ask about increasing their maximums and were able to add more seats in the most popular classes.  We appreciate our instructors being willing to add students where the facilities allowed.

A la Carte Registration Date Moved Up to March 27 from April 11.  You will be able to purchase individual seminars, evening event tickets, and all remaining workshop seats beginning Monday, March 27, 7 AM.  The Conference Package option will no longer be available for sale after March 19.  The Package pricing at $395 is a $70 discount over the individual ticket prices for 3 seminars and the 3 evening events at $465. The registration system no longer has the ability to save partial registrations. We recommend entering all of the required personal information and saving that by registering, and then return to the system to make your selections and pay for them.

Breaking News section on the top of the home page at https://anwgconference.org/archive/2023/

Here’s where you will find the latest information, changes, and updates as we go through the next 4 months.  The Juried Show has extended the entry deadline to April 15.

Hotel Rooms:  We have added hotel rooms to our room blocks at both the Riverhouse and Red Lion Hotels.  Information and contact phone numbers and reservation links are available on the website under the tab “Places” at the top of each webpage.  Element Hotel rooms are also still available.  Linda Kubik’s sewing workshops will be held at this hotel.  Her seminars over the weekend will be held in the Riverhouse Convention Center.

FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions:  Additional questions and answers and terms of service will be added to the FAQ webpages located under the “About” tab at the top of each webpage. These FAQs are updated regularly, so check back often.

Marketplace Vendor Hall:  We still have space available for a few more fiber arts vendors.  If you have a recommendation for a vendor, please contact Charlene Virts with their contact information.  You can tell your favorite vendors that you would love to shop with them at the conference.
