Sprang has a long history with humans. It has been used since at least 1300 BC to create stretchy objects and garments such as bonnets, bags, sashes, shirts, socks, and leggings. The use of sprang can be traced through European history, from Bronze Age Scandinavia to the ancient Greeks and Romans, to ancient Egypt, through European Renaissance times to pre-industrial Western Europe. We will trace this history through historic artifacts and images. Presenter Carol James will share photos of garments she made that were inspired by these historic artifacts and images and discuss insights revealed in the making of these reconstructions. The presentation ends with a survey of some modern garments that can be made using the sprang technique.
