Despite the fact that Satin is one of the three main textile weaves, it remains a mystery to many handweavers. This may be because it requires 5 or more shafts; it could be the dense sett required or maybe it is because there is so little readily available information about weaving satin. Whatever the cause, this seminar will help clear up the mystery and encourage weavers to try their hand at weaving a few yards of satin for themselves.
Using WeavePoint software to demonstrate and some pencil and paper exercises, we’ll learn how to create “shaded satins” going from Satin to Sateen in a step-by-step progression. We’ll learn about “satin counters”, what they are and how to derive the counters for various types of satin. The discussion will include information on sett, fiber choices and throughout we’ll discover ways to let your weaving software do the heavy lifting in the design process.
